Lately it seems that every night it is a battle to try and get Elliott to eat dinner. Brian and I don't get it - we like to eat! Elliott has a few stand-by foods that usually work like chicken nuggets, mini corn dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches and nutella sandwiches. We feed him those options on nights we eat Indian food or other spicy meals that aren't kid favorites. However when we eat things that Elliott has liked in the past or are mild and yummy, he refuses and fights and whines and doesn't want to eat. Last Sunday we had roast and potatoes and Elliott requested mashed potatoes so on Monday night, we made mashed potatoes. He loved them! Although the way he ate them may have contributed to that feeling! He used his hands to make mounds and ate with his fingers (more like whole hands.)
Smooshing the potatoes out between his fingers....people like the feeling of their toes in the sand right? So why not the feeling of potatoes through your fingers?
We didn't mind him playing with his food since it ended up here:
YUM!
His hands got so messy that he had to get creative to get a drink.
That worked too and he found it very fun!
He finished his potatoes without a fight!
And we warned him that next time we have mashed potatoes, he will have to use a fork or spoon!

Ah yes, the food fights. Brian was terribly picky as a kid. But look, now he likes to eat and I've not heard any reports lately of him not liking to eat.
